Boston Poultry Exposition 2011 Fall Show!

November 13, 2011

Good Show! Very well run and beautifully decorated! A beautifully sculpted rooster was carved from ice to add a classic effect for our great Boston Show! Thanks to Steven Blash for the use of his family’s arena.
Good Food! Super Show!!  The Silkie judge was especially careful in seeing the structure and posture as well as the color and crest size. This was Don Nelson, a well established professional. He seems to see the standard in his head and place a bird in that image. He is not married to the big crest either! I think he is loooking at a more practical bird, one who can reporduce easily and function as a bird!
Good job, Don, and thanks!

Sussex County Poultry Fanciers Fall Show, Sussex County Fairgrounds, Augusta, NJ

October 27, 2011

October 22, 2011,
53 Silkies, 19 Exhibitors,
Dwight Scott , Judge

I just have to say that when you enter a show that is 5 hours from your home, you have to spend money for gas and motel and a farm sitter.  It is not cheap! All exhibitors expect to be treated with respect. A show should start on time, have judges who carry a Standard when needed, and arrange the birds according to variety. Sorry I had to say something. Sour grapes?Maybe.
Other than that, It was a lovely day for a drive, the food, auctions and sales were great and the people were fun as usual! Thank you!

New Hampshire Poultry Fanciers Fall Show 10/9/11

October 10, 2011

Champion Featherleg goes to Golden Egg Farm with a WHITE BEARDED SILKIE PULLET!! Reserve of Breed to Golden Egg Farm with a NON BEARDED BLACK PULLET!!So exciting to go to the Champion Row!!and the Non Bearded Pullet is definitely a dark horse!

Champion White Bearded Pullet:

Black Non Bearded Pullet -Reserve of Breed !!

Black Non Bearded, a first in the winner’s circle!! I see the tail could be a little puffier and higher so I will be working on that. But her fresh black face is clearly seen against a high and full crest. These birds can see well and act a lot more like chickens than a heavily crested bearded bird. I’d like to see more of these cool Silkies!

Here is another shot of her. You can see a little of her personality in this one. I need a professional camera person to show the blackness of her feathers.

Looking for a winter market for my eggs???

October 7, 2011

Fall on the Farm

September 15, 2011

Here are my terrible puppies! Jazzy, Lamb Chop and the worst, Freida. Guess they would be very boring if they did not each have their own strong personalities. I love them to pieces!

Hurricane did not touch us thank goodness!

Looking now toward the fall shows. First to come up is Cobleskill or the Eastern New York Poultry Fanciers Annual Fall Show at Cobleskill, NY., Oct 25, Sunday.  Hope to see all my Silkie Friends there!

Fall Farmers Markets  in full bloom. Customers are very excited about real fresh eggs and want more colors in the dozens. I am working on that and looking for some good white leghorn roosters to pair up with the Ameraucanas who can not keep up, given their own genes. Amerilegs were good last year so I want to make some more.

Wool is getting popular again so I have lots of new colors as well as natural grey and whites from Romney, Border Leister and Southdown Sheep. All Sheep have been raised in Massachusetts near my farm. I buy the raw fleece, wash it, spin, it and dye it. Skeins of 120 yards are $12.00 each and can be had at Eastleigh Farm Store in Framingham, The Molin Farm Store in Hardwick and at the Arlington Farmers Market in Arlington, Ma. every Wed. at 2-6:30 PM until Oct 26th, 2011.

Again I am looking for a winter market and hope to find one soon. I do not want to be loaded down with with fresh eggs in November with no place to go!!

One more thing ! Goat Meat will be ready this week. I will have ground, stew meat, and chops from this summers crop of 4 small goats that lived in the woods all summer, gobbling up trees and brush and some hay in the evening. Good lean meat with a delicate flavor. $7.00 per pound for stew and ground and $8.00 for chops.

Thanks for reading,

Kate

PS Hand made Redware Pie Plates are in great demand so I will be making up some of those for the stores and markets here in time for the holidays.
